Hi! this is my first blog about my weight loss surgery! I am 2 months post op, 40 lbs lighter and feeling great!
At first it was really hard just to eat soup soup soup but once I made it to 1 month and introduced fish, chicken and turkey, I feel much better then before. I just started to get my energy back sometime last week. I felt weary, weak, tired, lethargic and barely able to pick up the remote. Yes Irene suffered! My husband started off very supportive but im sure he wishes things would return to normal. He's probably thinking "I thought she was supposed to have MORE energy!"
Well it gets better every day!
I started taking the vitamins that I should have started taking when I got out of the hospital.
1. crushing pills is absolutely discusting and the only ones i cared about taking were percoset and tylenol since they make things feel better.
2. protein drinks are disgusting and i cant stomach them. I was able to drink them after surgery when I was on liquids, but now that I have switched to food, they make me feel sick when I drink them. Not to mention the scaly film I get on my tongue and lips when I drink them. I get 60 oz of protein from 3 3-4oz servings of chicken or fish (they have about 25g per 3 oz)
It seems that the vitamins help with energy or digestion or Im not sure what, but I feel better when I take them.
I also take an antidepressant becuase its VERY HARD to be cheery/happy/not a total witch when your used to eating lots all the time, then your vice is taken away from you. I think that its playing a major role in my happiness and keeping me from going off the deep end when I really really want to stray and I know I cant since it will make me sick. Sometimes I feel like the weight should be dropping off faster (even though in reality its melting off) and I get sad when I get on the scale and the numbers are the same. But I know that I am relearning how to eat and this is a process and I have been eating the wrong way for 20ish years, Im not going to get healthy in just a few months.
Also its amazing to watch other people eat "normal" portions of food and remain small. It makes me feel a little jelous that they still get to eat junk and they dont balloon up to 250 lbs. maybe they eat a little less then I did or they exercize a little more, but dont tell me that there is not something else that has to do with it! Yes I had something to do with how big I got (me and my big mouth) but do I really have to give up dairy, soda, alcohol and chocolate to be thin? yes Erika you do and you will be better off without it!
On to things that you REALLY want to know about. (more then my mental health)
You want to know what I am eating and what I am not eating, and how someone can loose 40 lbs in 2 months!
Ill tell you what I do eat
Baked tilapia. Sometimes I sprinkle some bread crumbs or cracker crumbs on the top.
grilled/baked chicken. yes I use breading in baking situations, but I only put it on the top of the chicken. The rest of the family gets it dipped in something then coated on both sides.
Soup. Vegetable and noodle, tomato broth taste the best, and I am officially tired of chicken noodle soup!
Deli turkey. Recently I have dicovered that I can eat it rolled in a tortilla with a piece of cheese and miracle whip light
Yogert. Activia or Dannon drinkable shots. for some reason I can tolerate this stuff and its got live active cultures so its good for me. its really sweet and hard to get past my tastebuds but I do it for intestinal health!
Ground beef. I can eat a hamburger from hardees or burger king with only lettuce and ketchup, no bun. Its ok but beef is a little heavy. burger king and hardees charbroil their hamburgers so they are not as greasy as anywhere else. Not that I would order a hamburger from anywhere else becuase I didnt eat them pre surgery so why would I now?
I made a meatloaf on saturday and I am able to eat it. Its really lean beef and not too greasy, but I put some stuffing mix in it so its a little carby.
Crystal light. I drink about 2 liters a day. I make a pitcher at night and drink it dry by the next day. Calorie free and for some reason regular water makes my stomach feel a little queasy, so for now im drinking that stuff by the pitcher!
yogert and Cheese. For some reason these things are tolerated by my stomach. I think they both have bacteria in them, or at least the yogert says it does. who knows about the cheese but its good on everything!
What I dont eat
Sugar. none. Things labled "sugar free" like candy/ice cream have sugar alcohols in them that I cannot tolerate so most things sweet that are desserty I cant eat. I read that we tell our selves that we need to eat things that taste sweet and the sweeter things are that we eat, the sweeter things taste. That is why its dangerous to eat things that are "sugar free" and also things made with artifical sweetner (especially since usually they are sweeter then sugar) we are only replacing empty calories with more empty calories. there is no nutritional value in those foods and we dont need to eat them. Its probably why yogert taste like its soooo sweet. Since I dont eat sugar Im not used to the sweet. I do eat lots of fake sugar becuase I have always had a sweet tooth and I have to wean myself off that junk. Unless Im going to eat exclusively from the meat and produce section of the store, Im going to have to eat some of the fake stuff. Its just more convienant.
Carbs. And when I say I dont eat them I mean that I eat about 50g a day. Carbs make sugar, sugar makes energy. Andy told me that when you stop eating carbs then your body switches over to burning fat. Burn baby burn! Ill probably talk about carbs more in a later blog when I learn more about them. I avoid them, but they make everything taste sooo goood! I have to have bread crumbs on my fish and chicken! I have to put my turkey on a piece of bread! (ok I dont have to) but I used to eat a lot lot lot more carbs in my life and now I have reduced it by a very large margin. Also if Im eating carbs I have to balance it out with protein. As long as there is more protein then carbs then I dont feel sick, but sometimes I get gutsy and try something carby and I feel crappy afterwards.
Ham. deli ham made me feel sick, and its fatty so whats the point. I love turkey anyways
Pork. any kind. chops bacon whatever. i read it takes 8 hours to digest. i believe it! I miss bacon but I can live without the rest. yes I can live without ribs..... but bacon? aww we'll see in a year.....
Beef. ground beef yes, other beef, no. yes its a protein but steak is hard to digest and chew. I just dont do it.
Vegetables. Ok technically I can eat them but I feel full from 3-4oz of protein and I take vitamins. I assume they are going to give me nasty gas so Im avoiding them for now and will resume eating them in a few months.
Fruit. Yes I can eat this too they say, but why bother? I have never been a fan of fruit and its sugary anyways... Ill get around to it later.
Milky dairy. It gives me outrageously contaminated gas. I cant stand the smell myself. I get "gurgle" stomach and gut. I call it the "rushing waters" effect becuase that is what it sounds like. Soy milk does the same thing.
So get a half cup measure out of your cabinet, put it on a small plate, imagine its full of fish or chicken, and that is all I eat. 3 times a day. I plan it out so that I try to keep it equalish hours apart. I get rumbly in my tumbly if I go too long without eating. It makes me think twice if I want to eat. I think, If I eat this, I only have 2 or 1 or 0 meals left to eat today. If we get up extra early and I have a long day, I eat a quarter cup of soup. Soup does not satisy for very long so I dont like to eat it as a meal, but it tides me over until I can eat protein, and it has vegetables in it.
I just started exercizing yesterday so more of that later.
Suppose that is all I know for today!
I try new foods every once in a while, and Im always looking for a low carb version of anything. Ive dusted off the cookbooks since I eat the same meat everyday. I had catfish for breakfast today! Not usual breakfast fare but I do what makes my stomach happy.
