I started this journey about a year ago. I first heard about gastric bypass surgery on 60 Minutes. They discussed WLS for several patients who were diabetics (insulin dependent) and had high blood pressure and various other ailments due to their weight gain. They discussed how the diabetes and the high blood pressure was either eliminated or normalized to the point that very little meds were needed. I felt like they did this story especially for me, they were speaking to me!! So I listened and started my own research. What I found was exactly what 60 Minutes claimed. That people who are overweight and have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea (all of which I have or at least had) and other ailments that are directly associated with obesity can be 'cured' or should I say eliminated with WLS.

I consulted with my primary care doctor and cardiologist, both of which know my family history ( both my parents high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, mother had a triple heart bypass and father had a quadruple heart bypass) so they agreed with me that gastric bypass surgery would be beneficial for me to avoid the cardiac problems on top of everything else that I had inherited from my parents. My doctors knew that I had tried every imaginable weight loss program to no avail. My cardiologist gave me the name of Dr. Terrence Fullum and I THANK her for that.  Dr. Fullum was God sent.

I walked into his office with all the necessary tests and documentation that was required by my insurance on March 13,2009, surgery was approved by my insurance about 10 days later and surgery was scheduled for April 16, 2009 the day after my 55th birthday . WOW, what a GREAT birthday present!!! It is a LIFESTYLE change that I WELCOME with an open mind and heart.
