I am 25 and teach music to K-5th grades. I have been dealing with my weight problem my whole life. Both my parents had WLS in the 80's. Also, my three aunts and a cousin have had it, in addition to other family members. Obviously, genetics has a role in my wieght, but it's not the only factor. I have met with the team at MUSC and am so excited to start really living my life. My surgery date is scheduled for JUNE 1st! YAY! I'm a little nervous about the whole idea, but I know that it will make a lasting impact on my life for the better.
Unfortunately, my insurance will not cover the surgery. Dr. Byrne at MUSC has urged me to write to my congressman about this problem. It's a shame that the 440,000+ people in SC with my insurance are not covered for a surgery that has so many lasting health benefits for qualified candidates. Indeed, it would save the company money in the long run, and there is data to prove that fact. For now, I have to do it on my own with the help of family. But I know it's worth it, and can't wait to start the rest of my life!
