Ruary O'Connell

"I was terrified when I first went to see Dr. O'Connell. I wasn't sure what was going to happen or if I would even qualify for the surgery. Dr. O'Connell put me at ease immediately. From the first he was reassuring and explained everything to me. He actually seemed to care about me and what happened to me ... what had been happening to me as a result of my obesity. As time when by I viewed him more as a father figure and the man who saved my life. It's difficult these days to find a doctor (any doctor) who takes time to know his patients and who is as caring. Dr. O'Connell is truly a jewel in the medical profession. His staff was always friendly and it often seemed like family when I went in for appointments. Even the patients felt a connection to each other. The staff was also caring. Heather in particular seemed to be infatigueable. She came to see me the evening of my surgery and I was very grateful. She has never ceased to have a smile on her face or listen to me with an attitude of concern, encouragement or whatever the situation called for. What I like least about Dr. O'Connell and staff? I liked least when it was no longer necessary for me to go there on a regular basis. I miss them. Aftercare, as I mentioned before was incredible. There was plenty to learn and Dr. O'Connell and his staff never left me in the dark about anything. Their aftercare program is very helpful and addressed topics I never thought I would have to address like how I would feel about myself after I lost the weight. It was a joy to be sure but my personality and my life took some turns I never expected. Dr. O'Connell's office helped me through all of it. However it would have been nice to be warned that my life would change dramatically but I'm not sure I would have listened, I was so intent on going ahead with the surgery regardless. All the risk of surgery were explained to me but I have to admit that no matter what the risk was, the risk of remaining obese far out weighed the risk of having surgery. Overall I would rate them Triple AAA, an eleven on a scale of one to ten, the best! As far as surgical competence and bedside manner ... I have trusted Dr. O'Connell more than once with my life and would again. His surgical competence is excellent and is surpassed only by his wonderful bedside manner!"
