Sherry,
The RNY is favored becasue it is an easier, shorter and cheaper procedure to do. That is the entire reason why your insurer will cover RNY not DS. Many will tell you that the malaborption is the issue- it is not- simply cost- that is all insurers care about. Surgeons do not do DS's because the are a longer procedure- they can do 2 RNY's in the same time they do one DS. Because the procedure is longer- greater risk of anethesia-related risks. The DS has a better success rate than the RNY, and personally I would not have had surgery at all if I was limited to only RNY. There are plenty of RNY'ers getting revisions to DS- (and even more VBG'ers getting revisions to DS) but I have NEVER heard of a DS'er getting a revision- one or two who had their bowel lenthened, but no one who had to have another surgery because they didn't lose enough weight after having a DS.
