Dr. Rout was highly recommended by operating room physicians (board certified), and nurses affiliated with Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

One other thing that I would like to mention....I noticed that very seldom does anyone on this site, refer to the Psych Evaluation (required by many insurance companies). Dr. Rout works closely with three Psychologists. The one that I ended up going to was Dr. Gold's office on the 11th floor of Shands Hospital. They were just wonderful and sent me an information packet prior to my visit. I had just the one visit and they referred me back to Dr. Rout's office with their blessings!
POST-OP NOTE: SHANDS HOSPITAL IN GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA HAS THE WORST NURSING CARE I HAVE EVER EXPEREINCED. THE SURGICAL UNIT ON THE 6TH FLOOR IS UNDERSTAFFED, AND UNATTENTIVE...THERE WERE TIMES WHEN I WOULD REQUEST PAIN MEDS AND WAIT FOR 30 MINUTES FOR THE NURSE TO COME TO THE ROOM. SOMETIMES I WOULD RING THE CALL LIGHT SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THEY WOULD RESPOND. THE FIRST POST-OP NIGHT, THE NURSE CALL LIGHT AT MY BEDSIDE DID NOT WORK. I WAS LEFT ALONE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CALL FOR ASSISTANCE. DURING MY FIRST NIGHT, I HAD VERY LITTLE PAIN MEDICATION AND THE FOREIGN SPEAKING NURSE CAME INTO THE ROOM TWICE OVER A 12 HOUR PERIOD. IT WAS A VERY BAD EXPERIENCE.

Dr. Rout is very business like. He tells you the way it is. As a surgeon, he is the best. I was very pleased with him. His office can be unorganized, but they are very polite. When you have an appointment with him be prepared to wait. There is a structured aftercare program. On the scale of 1 to 10 I would give Dr. Rout a 10.

My first impression of Dr. Rout was that he seemed to be very professional. He answered all my questions, and seemed to be a very knowledgeable. Dr. Rout did my surgery on June 14, 2001.Dr. Rout seems to be a very competent surgion. I have had no complications. His bedside manner was good but very business like. If I were to rate him on a scale of 1 to 10 he would get a 10. Dr. Routs office staff were very good also. The only thing about going for a Dr. appointment, be prepaired to wait a good while. Dr. Rout does emphasize good after care.

Dr. Rout was very nice very up front and no sugar coating. He wants the best for everyone and will make you take the extra step to get there. No short cut. I have had my stomach stapled in the 1988 and he wants the opertation report from that sugery, a upper GI. I wish I would have known I could have had this done before my first appt. I did everything else that I could do. I went to Dr. Gold (PSY testing) before and I was hoping to get a date for surgery but I have another appt on July 10, 2001 I am hoping for good news that he will do my surgery. I feel like the first Doctor I had was a butcher shop compared to Dr. Routs office. But I have to remember that is was in the 80's and it has come along way.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Dr. Rout. I was extremely anxious after reading descriptions of him here. We had our initial consultation on 5/29/01 and he was wonderful! He seems very competent and very patiently and thoroughly answered all of my questions. I feel reassured with him.If I had to prioritize, surgical competence would outweigh pleasant bedside manner, however, after meeting Dr. Rout, I feel he will do an exceptional job for me! I recommend him highly.

My appt. with Dr. Rout will be on April 24th.
I have heard very nice things about him, and
expect to get along well with him. I will add
any further comments after I actually meet him.

April 28, 2001--I finally was able to meet with
Dr. Rout. I had been warned that he was not a
real personable man, and that was accurate. He
was very nice and told me all about the surgery
and willingly answered any questions that I
asked. He told me that this surgery is a mean
to achieve weight loss and that I must work
very hard on my end, to achieve my goals. He
noticed that I am a nurse and asked about
what kind of nursing I had done, if I had an
active license, and if I ever get to resume
working, what would I want to do. Not everyone
can have a wonderful bedside manner, but I
have no doubts about his skills. His staff
was very friendly and helped to ease my fears.
I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Rout to
anyone else.

I liked him instantly. I did have to wait awhile in the waiting room but he was very nice and very informative.

I liked him, enjoyed his support groups and looked forward to having the surgery, february 21st, 2001. However, about 5 days before my surgery date I got a phone call informing me that he had to post pone my surgery. I attended the next support group meeting only to find out that Dr. Marshall is not doing the surgery for obesity any longer. I am now hoping to see Dr. Hocking in Gainesville. I got approval for the surgery, but now am having trouble getting permission to go outside my area to see a doctor. Its been a long hard struggle, but I am not giving up!!!!

Dont let your first impression of Dr Rout scare you. He comes across very serious and to the point. Of course he is serious about what he does he believes in Gastric Bypass or he wouldnt be doing it. He wants he patients to do well. After seeing him in the hospital setting and for my first return visit I find him very amusing. He has a sence of humor that you dont see often. I will always be greatful for the chance he has given me to finaly lose weight and keep it off.

I had my appt with Dr. Rout. He was very thorough and spent a great deal of time with me. My only complaint is the long wait in the waiting room, but that is the price you pay for the extra time spent with you! The office staff was very helpful and kind. It appears that there is a very well structured program for before and after care.
