Dear Melanie, The lab band can be reversed and can and has helped many people sucessfully lose weight. You can always go back and get an RNY later if you do not get the results you expected from the band. I wish you luck with either, I am glad you are getting the opportunity to get WLS surgery, even if it is not the type of surgery you wanted. I am sooooo nervous myself. I think it really helps to reach out. I even made myself a CD with encouraging songs on it like, Angel by Sarah McLaughlin, and Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. Just think good possitive thoughts. It will be interesting to keep up with your progress since our dates are so close. I am looking forward to a new life as I am sure you are. Just remember it is all smooth sailing after everything is said and done. I have had quite a few friends say the pain is bad, but remember, it only lasts for a few days and every bit of it is worth it. I hope that the nice drugs work for you and it is very smooth sailing from here on out. You can handle it like a breeze, you came this far, and from what I understand, the waiting for an insurance approval, getting all paperwork in, and getting a date scheduled is harder than the actual surgery. Take care of yourself! I wish you a speedy recovery. Remember to get someone to update us on how you are doing. :-) -Mary Western Conway SC Pre-op- 284 BMI 43 Surgery date 7/8/02

Hi Melanie, Just responding to your desperate cry! I think you should relax and see what happens when the time comes. If the lap band is the way for you to go then do it. (That's what I am having) It is much less surgery recovery and healing, yet there is some follow-up to go with it. It is adjustable, meaning that you can get more restriction if you need it, or less. In my heart I feel it is the better way to go, for me at least. With the band, it is fully reversible, just in case sometime down the road you change your mind and decide to go through with the RNY. There is lots of support with people on the bandsters web site on yahoo, I've met some great people there who can answer almost any question you may have about it. Please relax and know that either way you go, the result is the same - a leaner, healthier you! Good luck to you, let me know what happens! Take care, Sue

I NEED ADVICE ASAP!!!!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!! I am scheduled for surgery in 19 hours.. open rny. My doctors office just called and told me that my ins. company approved me for lap band not open rny!!! I am losing my ins. July 1st. The doctors office has called my ins. company to try to get them to change it to RNY. I was told to go ahead to the hospital in the morning( a 4 1/2 hour drive) and if they could not get it changed that I still could have lap band. I have not researched lap band very much because I wanted RNY. I need to hear from you all that have had the Lap band. Is the weight loss the same? Do you have the feeling of fullness..ect..? How much followup care is needed for the lap band? What about diet after surgery? I do not have time to wait for them to approve the RNY if they dont change it tomorrow because of the ins. so I will be forced to do the lap band. Please.. any response will be greatly appreciated.
