Two years ago someone decided to use Duregesic patches to control Wanda's pain following the surgeries. The patch is good for 3 days. We have been applying the patch over this time period and found that when we were late in putting on a new patch, or tried to go without it, Wanda became very anxious and depressed. Turns out the patch contains a potent and addictive narcartic, which is 80 times stronger than morphine. We reduced the dosage gradually over several months and then went cold turkey. It was hell. After 4 weeks, although things have improved, Wanda is still coping with withdrawal issues. As a result, the elbow surgery has been moved to April 27. Otherwise, it's going well as Wanda continues to use her walker and cane for mobility. She is using the electrical cart when shopping at the local super market. Her driving skills have diminished somewhat. Last week she crushed several boxes of saltine crackers when cruising down one of the aisles. - Jack Smart

Hi Wanda and Jack - Just checking in to see how things are going and to let you know that we are thinking of you. Wanda, you really are an inspiration to me. There are times when I am feeling so down that I could just give up. Then I think of you... your tenacity, your ability to face your problems head on without complaint, your inner strength, and all of the mountains that have been placed in your path, through no fault of your own, and have successfully climbed each one to get where you are today. It's then that I know I can go on. Keep working hard at your recovery, as you are accomplishing so much. Hope to hear from you all soon. Hugs, love, and peace - Mel

Hey Wanda and Jack - Great to hear such good news about your continued progress! You both still amaze me with the positive outlook that you have managed to maintain throughout these past two very difficult years. I know it been extremely hard on both you and your family. Good luck with the next surgery, and keep up the hard work... it's really paying off! Hugs, love, and peace - Mel

For those who don't remember, or have never read Wanda Smart's surgery ordeal - please take some time to review her 2 year struggle. She has battled so hard to recoup some of her life, and her husband has been diligent in keeping us informed. I don't wish to scare any preops, but I find Wanda's story compelling and I so wish for her success. She is a remarkable woman, with a remarkable supportive spouse. Read her story and share your spirit with this lovely couple. Carol Calvin
