After I had my son in March of 1998, I was no longer considered a diet controlled Diabetic and was put on Glucophage. Over the next year, I lost all my baby weight plus an extra 20lbs. I had been going through marital problems this whole time and at one point I quit buying groceries for our apartment because my then husband wasn't helping to pay for anything and was eating all the food. I thank god that my son was on baby food then and I had no worries over his nutrition. By the time I got thin, the marriage was over and I was able to go out with a body that I really had never had before. I loved my body. The summer of 1999 I was told I could go off the Glucophage because I was well controlled but by the time January of 2000 rolled around, the weight started to creep up again. I was in the military so I was doing PT and raising a 1 1/2 yr old so there really wasn't a reason for my weight to go up. It is now 2008 and I weight more now than when I walked out of the hospital with a newborn baby. I have tried everything from starvation, 500 calories a day, working out 2 hrs a day 6 days a week, and the all-time jittery pill Xenadrine. Nothing has helped me to lose, only at times have I maintained because of these approaches. It has come to a point that I am on 46 units of Lantus, 10-20 units of Regular, 10mcg's of Byetta, and the ever wonderful tasting Glucophage. If I don't take my meds, I can obtain a blood sugar of 500 without too much problem. My blood pressure has steadily begun to creep up into the 120's which for some is an awesome number but for me, who is used to being near 100, that is a big increase. I found out last year that I had sleep apnea, what a shocker, who knew? I didn't snore! I opted to have the UP3 done instead of wear an awful CPAP (I'm too young and tooooo single to wear the mask at night!), I read alot on what people thought of the surgery and knew that it was not guaranteed, but I needed to try. OMG that surgery was BAD. I wasn't physically able to eat or drink beyond taking pain pills (yes pills for someone who had major throat surgery....) for 10 days. Yeah, I lost some weight but as most of us know, that didn't last. I had hoped that in getting rid of the apnea problem, my cortisol levels would decrease and I would finally begin to lose, what the heck was I thinking? I have been seeing the same Doctor for a few years now and I have complained and complained about the health problems I face (did I mention that I also have PCOS??) and in January, I talked to my doc about Gastric bypass. I was put on a Physician managed weight loss program which utilized these shakes, which were not entirely that bad. But I am sure you can guess how that went....my surgery is scheduled for Sept 8 (it was Sept 16th but there was a cancelation!!). I am having the Lap. Roux-en-y procedure done and I am freaking out right about now (it's 30 mins until Sept 1). I am seeing that it's the very normal response to being so close and I really am excited at the same time. Let's see if I can finally be the person I know I was meant to be.
