I actually have another web page here at Obesity Help and it is located at http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/members/profile.php?N=Hinson979593589 I have moved, remarried, and LIVED a WONDERFUL life and honestly can not remember my user name and password for that page; SO, I will start over. That's OK! Fresh beginnings are always good!
I have gone through a physical battle that I wanted to share with anyone out there who may find themselves in a similar situation. Three years ago I found a huge lump in the front of my throat. I think I had finally lost enough weight that it could be felt. I went that afternoon and the doctor sent me on for tests looking for cancer. The test were never conclusive one way or the other; therefore, I underwent surgery to remove the lump. The surgeon had to remove most of my thyroid as it was encased in a tumor. The tumor had grown down into my larynx. I was unable to speak for six weeks (lucky Gary :-). The cyst was benign!! However, I had lost over half of my thyroid. My doctor ran blood test and checked my thyroid levels and decided to wait six months to see if the remaining thyroid would be able to produce enough hormone to sustain an adequate level. I "knew" I was in trouble after about a month. I felt TERRIBLE!!!
I returned to the doctor and shared my concerns. She felt certain that my thyroid would rebound. The six month mark rolled around and the blood test was run. I fell slightly BELOW the "range" and I thought, "Thank goodness, now she will do something!" Nope!!! She felt that since I was (in her words) so young, (I was 39) that beginning hormones should be a last resort. I told her that I did not feel like me any more, I was gaining weight and after losing 200+ pounds this WAS NOT acceptable. Still she felt that my body would adjust. I returned to her EVERY month and every month she came up with some excuse as to why I felt like crap. Finally, I gave up, decided to find an endocrinologist and scheduled an appointment. At my first visit she asked me "Why, are you NOT on a thyroid hormone medicine?" I could have cried! She immediately put me on Synthroid. In one year's time, (while I was messing around with the other doctor) I gain back 80 pounds! I was sick. I had worked so hard to lose the weight and here it was creeping back. I began the medicine and immediately felt MUCH better; but, the weight did not fall off. My doctor told me it wouldn't. :-( She told me the weight gain should STOP which it did, but what I had gained stayed.
Fast-forward six months........ we moved............out of the country and to a city!!!!! A city with a YMCA!! I began working out and REALLY watching what I eat and in 4 months I have lost 70 pounds. I am 10 pounds away from were I was before my thyroid surgery!!! I am so excited!! I have more work to do as I was not at my ultimate goal when things went haywire. I am looking to hitting my ultimate goal this summer.I wanted to update this with the thyroid difficulties because when this happened to me, I turned to ObesityHelp and looked for help here.
More later....
