Martha, my surgeon was adamant that I would not be able to take my Celebrex or any NSAID-type drugs for the rest of my life. Having suffered with the pain of degenerative arthritis of my hips for quite some time, this scared me. But, since losing almost 100 lbs, I have nowhere near the discomfort I had in the past, and on days when I do (cold, rainy days mostly) some Tylenol (extra strength) works very well. Knowing what a miracle the Celebrex felt like, I know the fear you are feeling, it works so well! But losing the weight will make your arthritic pain so much more easy to deal with. The Cox-2 Inhibitors and the NSAID's (Motrin,Alleve, Ibuprofin....) just have too much risk for someone with a gastric bypass. Hope this helps you.

Hi Martha, Just wanted to make comment on your post today 2/18/03. My doctor says no "N-SAIDS" at all. Which is any motrin-type product, or asprin. I was taking Celebrex pre-op, and am not allowed to take it now. If you are still taking it, I would stop until you research it further. I was told no anti-inflamatory meds. I could use it for my aches and pains, but try alternative meds, like jaccuzzi's and massage, acu-puncture, etc. Hope this helps.

Sept. 20,2002 I'm home from the hospital and all is well. I was supposed to have an 'open' RNY, but the doctor said he could do it lap after all. I had to stay an extra day because my left lung collapsed (due to the anethesia), but I'm doing my breathing exersices and everything is good! I do hear a lot of 'grumbling' from my bowels, that also to be expected. It feels so good to be back home!
