Manuel E. Castro-Arreola

"I just wanted to send an update about me... I am 4 1/2 months post op... I had surgery on Sept. 13, 2007 with Dr. Castro, and I weighed 451 pounds. I am now down to 377 pounds and my BMI has gone from 68.5 to 57.3. I cannot believe all the changes that have happened to me in that time. Let me just list a few because I am so happy I wanna brag about it :-) I no longer use a C-Pap machine to sleep, I seldom have to use oxygen at night anymore either. I haven't used a wheelchair in 3 months. Before surgery I couldnt walk across the room without sitting down to rest, now I am walking up to a mile a day everyday!!! I have had to buy new pants and shirts twice already and the latest pair are starting to fall off my hips when I walk! I am not unhappy about that either! lol I bought my first pair of real shoes again a couple of weeks ago... and I say that because for the last 5 years I have been wearing slippers or mocassins when I go out... and the most exciting thing of all... after 5 years of being on Social Security Disabilty, I AM GOING BACK TO WORK!!! And I start tomorrow!!!!!!! I can't believe how many changes I have gone through in such a short amount of time! I can't believe that I am going to go back into society and LIVE AGAIN!!!!! I am so amped, and so pumped that I can't hardly sit still!!! I am so proud of myself and my self esteem has risen again. I may not be thin yet... but I sure feel like I am some days! I just want to say one more thing, to Dr. Castro, Greg, LynnDora, Helen, Daph, & Jane... I LOVE YOU GUYS! Thanks for making me feel welcome, thanks for showing me show love and making me feel like part of your family at New Beginnings... thank you for giving me the tools to get my life back! I love you all so much... you will always have a special place in my heart! Be well!! Talk to you soon... rnShawn rnrn++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++rn++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++rnrnrnI just want to add a couple of things. It is Sept. 26, 2007. I had surgery 13 days ago. Things did not go exactly as planned, but once Dr. Castro realized he could not give me the gastric bypass in the condition I was in, I was already under and on the operating table. He went to my family and discussed the options. He listened to their opinions and feelings, and using that information he moved forward with my surgery. rnrnMy entire family thinks that Dr. Castro is the consumate professional. He is caring, kind, compassionate, and one hell of a surgeon. Again, and on behalf of my whole family, Thank you Dr. Castro. Thank you, because of you, I am getting my life back under control. I could'nt do this without you.rnrnShawnrnrnrn+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++rn++++++++++++++++++++++++++++rnrnrnrnMy first impression of Dr Castro and his staff was incredible. They are all so warm and friendly. I just love Daphne and Jane. Of course they are all so wonderful. I love it because I feel like they understand what I am going through. They aren't just feigning interest or concern, they really care. And Dr Castro, man, he gives off total confidence in what he is doing. He is the first Doctor that I talked to that didn't make me feel like I was going to die on his operating table. And I talked to at least 5 doctors over the last five years. He informed me in great detail about my procedure and what I would have to look forward to. He answered my questions, and never once got impatient with me, and never once talked down to me, like some doctors have done. And when I was doing my pre-op the other day, he came down the hall as I was leaving and instead of walking past me, he stopped and talked to me. Asked how I was feeling, if I was ready for surgery, if I had any questions! How cool is that?rnrnHe does address that there could be complications, and he went through them with me. He does make sure I know about the changes I will go through, and about the importance of aftercare. His entire program revolves around the patient, both pre- and post op. They devote themselves to educating the prospective patient so that you are fully informed about every aspect of the procedure, and what may happen afterward.rnrnI would rank Dr. Castro and the whole Staff at New Beginnings with a 10++++++++rnrnThank you all so much for trying to help give me my life back!rn"

"I would like to commend the powers that be for making their hospital such a great place for the sick to be cared for. The experience with the staff on 4 NE has been a highlight in all my medical troubles. They are friendly, attentive, and damn good at their jobs. Thank you for all the help during my stays through this weight loss process."
